Pay Range

$11.00 - $16.00 / hour

You must have the ability to work independently or under direct supervision; have strong classroom management, communication, relationship building, and critical thinking skills; and the ability to respond to emergency and safety situations. You must have a commitment to excellence and high standards in implementing quality programming to support our camp. The ideal candidate must have patience, compassion, and be able to build relationships with children ages Kindergarten through sixth grades. Camp Counselors are expected to keep campers active and engaged during the camp day.

A Day in the Life as a Camp Counselor

As a Camp Counselor, you will help the GVYMCA achieve its goals of fostering youth development and creating a safe environment for children to be successful. You will be working independently as well as in a group setting to teach children to build relationships, solve problems, and have fun. The Camp Counselor is a role model, that guides campers through STEAM activities, swimming, and sports activities.

Responsibilities As A Camp Counselor

  • Supervises a group of up to 15 children
  • Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with YMCA values
  • Must be active with children in daily activities (may include field trips, swimming, etc)
  • Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards
  • Attends staff meetings and training
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies
  • Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents, children, and other staff. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Who You Would Report to

  • School-Age and Camp Director

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • One (1) year or more of college preferred
  • Previous experience working with children, preferably in a day camp setting
  • At least eighteen (18) years of age
  • Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas:
    • outdoor living,
    • songs/music,
    • drama,
    • sports,
    • aquatics,
    • recreational games
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
  • Fulfillment of state-specific hiring standards (if any) and completion of YMCA program-specific certifications

  • Bi-lingual English/Spanish preferred, but not required

    • climb stairs, bend, stoop, kneel, twist, reach with hands, sit, stand for an extended period, climb, walk, lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds, have finger dexterity, grasp, perform repetitive motions, talk, hear, and have visual acuity
    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high
    • The work is performed both indoors and out
    • While performing the duties of this job the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.
