Requirements

The Veterinary Assistant promotes teamwork. They begin each day by making certain the exam rooms are client-ready. Each Assistant is always eager to help wherever needed. The daily checklist, restraining, and cleaning are the foundation of this position. When asked their answer is always yes, I will get someone to help us, will you show me how? Etc. They aid the technicians in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of basic pet handling and cleaning detail. They have a very significant role in communicating with our staff about our clients pets. They will also be crossed trained to help in the boarding department and to help our client service team. They will work towards training to become a technician.

Floor Veterinary Assistant Team Members provide excellent care as well as provide effective inter-staff communication and problem solving while continuing to cultivate a positive culture based on VHA Core Values.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Can provide compassionate care to patients and clients.
  • Can conduct oneself in a confident and professional manner even when stressed and/or focused on individual tasks.
  • Maintains positive, cooperative relationships with other team members.
  • Can enter accurate medical records, services, and fees into the practice software in accordance to hospital policy.
  • Understands the importance of a clean and orderly facility, does not hesitate to clean or organize as part of a normal job duty.
  • Can monitor inventory of all medical supplies and notify inventory manager as required.
  • Assist veterinarian or technicians in restraint and treatment of patients, even when large or difficult.
  • Monitor animals and do routine procedures, such as bloodwork, fecal and urine collection.
  • Fill prescriptions and prepare medications as prescribed by veterinarian.
  • Assist by loading rooms and communicate to the team
  • Assist with weights, TPRs and radiographs
  • Maintain stocked exam rooms, treatment area and surgical ORs.
  • Monitor and support visitors.
  • Assist with laundry and dishes as needed.
  • Perform nail trims and ear cleanings.
  • Answer phones as needed.
  • Checking in/out clients as needed, assist with tech-ing rooms to maintain flow when requested.
  • Venipuncture on non-emergency, non-critical patients (CVA only - with technician consent and supervision).
  • IV catheter placement on non-emergency, non-critical patients (CVA only - with technician consent and supervision).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the procedures used for receiving, treating, and scheduling patients, for ordering medical supplies, and requesting laboratory tests.
  • Knowledge of the use, care, and storage of veterinary instruments, materials, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of sterilization techniques to sterilize various instruments and materials.
  • Knowledge of hospital procedures and policies outlined in the current employee manual as well as those that are implied (reasonable expectations).
  • Knowledge of spelling and the meaning of commonly used veterinary terminology in order to accurately enter specific information onto patient records.
