13 week PICU traveler needed for the day/night rotation shift. PICU Synopsis: The Janet Weis Children's Hospital (JWCH) which is part of GMC has 89 licensed beds. The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), located within the Janet Weis Children's Hospital is a 12 bed mixed medical and surgical intensive care unit. The PICU provides services to the critically and acutely ill patient from the neonatal period until their 22nd birthday that requires specialized nursing care due to the nature and complexity of their illness or surgery. This includes pediatric trauma patients, post-operative patients and any patient with a life-threatening or critical illness requiring invasive monitoring or support of life-sustaining therapies. The PICU cares for all pediatric/neonatal patients that undergo post cardiothoracic surgery in the immediate post-operative period until they are stable for transfer to a lower level of care. PICU also cares for the progressive care patients in the JWCH as it does not currently have a dedicated step down unit for this demographic. Many of these patients are part of our Pediatric Hospital to Home Program for children with chronic ventilation needs and often require long term stays in the PICU for education and comprehensive care needs. The scope of care for the PICU patient requires a high quality evidence based nursing care model which is comprehensive and provides for frequent monitoring and assessment of physiologic parameters through direct patient interaction and observation to meet the patient's and families individual needs. Care of the pediatric patient is a collaborative effort that is managed by the 24 hours/7 day a week in-house PICU attending physicians, residents, PICU physician assistant and/or PICU advanced nurse practitioner and Attendings of the co-managing pediatric services. The PICU is staffed soley by registered nurses (RN). All RN staff are trained and have proven yearly competency in all pediatric age specific criteria for the care of the pediatric patient, maintain basic life support (BLS) and pediatric advanced life support (PALS) and in addition trauma certification hours assigned by the Pennsylvania Pediatric Trauma Foundation in order to maintain compliance for a Level II trauma center. Each PICU nurse completes a 6 month pediatric critical care orientation program that is a combination of on-line, didactic and hands on testing to fully exercise and evaluate critical thinking skills. Ancillary staff, such as nursing assistants (NAs) and unit desk clerks (UDCs), assists the nursing team in the care of the patient. Job Summary:Assesses plans, organizes, performs, and evaluates nursing activities to meet the needs of the patient. Promotes adaptive responses of patient and family to achieve the highest level of patient care, promote safety, and maximize patient satisfaction. Exhibits compassionate care during patient-nurse interactions. Coordinates patient care and interaction of staff. Meets the qualifications to provide care for patients in their assigned nursing unit. Responsible for ensuring the very best patient and family experience by optimizing all interactions.Job Duties:Completes assessments as established by scope of practice and unit standards.Addresses physical, psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual needs of patient and family throughout the continuum of care.Formulates, coordinates, and provides plan of care as established in unit standards including, patient and family education, family needs and discharge planning throughout hospitalization with members of the interdisciplinary team.Provides direct patient care including, treatments, medications, and diagnostic studies according to policy and procedure.Evaluates effectiveness of nursing interventions and revises plan of care based upon patient response to (link removed)itiates collaboration with physicians, ancillary personnel, and other interdisciplinary team members and acts to proactively resolve and facilitate patient needs.Problem solves, troubleshoots and takes corrective measures in the care and handling of equipment.Participates in unit-based decision-making regarding the utilization of evidence- based practice.Actively participates as a team member working toward team goals of the unit and organization and is accountable for unit and system specific metrics.Actively participates in patient quality and safety education programs and other activities designed to improve departmental and organizational quality and safety.Work is typically performed in a clinical environment.
