Requirements

The veterinary assistant promotes teamwork. Each Assistant is always eager to help wherever needed. The daily checklist, restraining, and cleaning are the foundation of this position. When asked their answer is always yes, I will get someone to help us, will you show me how? Etc. They aid the technicians in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of basic pet handling and cleaning detail. They have a very significant role in communicating with our staff about our clients pets.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Can provide compassionate care to patients and clients.
  • Can conduct oneself in a confident and professional manner even when stressed and/or focused on individual tasks.
  • Can enter accurate medical records into the practice software in accordance to hospital policy.
  • Can prepare and maintain the exam rooms to include oncology and treatment rooms and hallways.
  • Can effectively restrain pets even when large or difficult.
  • Understands all common vaccinations and vaccination protocols and can explain to clients.
  • Understands the importance of a clean and orderly facility, does not hesitate to clean or organize as part of a normal job duty.
  • Maintains positive, cooperative relationships with other employees.
  • Can monitor inventory of all medical supplies and notify inventory control as required.
  • Assist veterinarian or technicians in restraint and treatment of patients.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of exam rooms, comfort room, and ultrasound.
  • Monitor animals and do routine procedures, such as bloodwork, x-rays, and fecal and urine collection.
  • Fill prescriptions and prepare medications as prescribed by veterinarian.
  • Enter services provided in records and computer.
  • Clean up surgery, treatment, and lab.
  • Assist by loading rooms and communicate to the team.
  • Assist with weights and TPRs.
  • Perform, monitor and complete hyperbaric treatments once training and certification has been completed.
  • Maintain stocked and clean ICU area.
  • Monitor and support visitors.
  • Complete daily, weekly, and monthly checklists.
  • Referral letters are sent out daily
  • Ensure every patient in ICU is in a clean cage
  • Assist nurse with in-house lab work
  • Provide exceptional patient care
  • Ensure all patients in ICU have a cage card, name band and treatment plan
  • Assist veterinarians and nurses with ultrasounds
  • Assist with laundry and dishes as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Knowledge:

Veterinary Assistant Certification (CVA) required.
