Instnt is seeking a Lead Backend Engineer (JAVA) to join our team of innovators and engineers.  This role reports directly to the Co-Founder &  Chief Product Officer and works closely with DevOps, Product Design and Data Science.  The Lead Backend Engineer will be instrumental in the building of Instnt’s product. The ideal candidate is an energetic self-starter with the ability to make independent strategic decisions. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

• In collaboration with the Chief Product Officer, lead Instnt’s technology strategy.


• Design, code, and troubleshoot new features, while debugging as necessary. 


• Write clean code to develop functional web applications.


• Responsible for the evaluation and development of Instnt’s initial engineering process.


• Work closely with Front-end developers to integrate user-facing elements with server side logic.


• Manage cutting-edge technologies to improve legacy applications.


• Oversee the hiring process of the engineering department, including but not limited to, determining necessary skills / qualifications, interviewing, and onboarding / training. 


• Act as a mentor to fellow Engineers, sharing knowledge and contributing to the team’s continued growth and improvement. 


• Keep current with technology and developments within the financial technology space. 

Technical Skills Required: 

• In-depth understanding of the entire web development process (design, development and deployment)


• Familiarity with front-end languages (e.g. HTML, JavaScript and CSS)


• Strong experience with Java


• Working knowledge of CMS framework

The Ideal Candidate will possess: 

• Minimum of 5 years experience in a related position


• Proven work experience as a Backend Developer


• Experience building engineering teams, including hiring qualified candidates, and identifying and developing necessary skills / capabilities


• People management experience preferred


• Excellent analytical and time management skills


• Experience working in a start-up organization is preferred but not required


• Teamwork skills with a problem-solving attitude
