Description:

  • The Licensed Practical Nurse, as a member of a health care team, provides direct care services to patients in treatment facilities such as hospitals or clinics to insure their physical, emotional and mental well-being. The LPN works to facilitate patient flow through the OHSU Doernbecher Pediatric Specialty Clinic, Springfield, OR. The LPN ensures an accurate and complete medical record for each patient.
  • Under the direction and supervision of a Licensed Medical Professional or M.D., and in accordance with OHSU policies and procedures, the LPN provides basic care as a member of the patient care team.
  • Patient care activities are related to rooming, measuring, recording, and reporting patient information and performing simple treatments and procedures. The LPN recognizes and addresses age-appropriate needs when caring for patients.
  • In addition, the LPN assists with checking-in patients, maintaining the practice environment in a clean, orderly condition including cleaning, and stocking rooms. Participates in ongoing professional development and competency assessment, and participates in ongoing quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Performs requirements for Staff Members as outlined in Compliance Roles and Responsibilities in OHSU Hospitals and Clinics. This position performs in a manner which maintains the confidentiality and privacy of each patient, promotes positive health habits through appearance and attitude.
  • The LPN supports and adheres to the Code of Conduct and Policies and Procedures of both OHSU hospital and clinics and the Department of Pediatrics, models ethical and appropriate behavior, professional standards, compliance and personal integrity.
  • Function/Duties of Position Patient Care Assists medical staff with patient assessment, care and procedures as necessary within the scope of practice. Coordinates with referring physician offices and external testing facilities to ensure proper documentation is in EpicCare prior to patient appointment.
  • Weighs and measures patients, takes and records blood pressure, pulse, respiration, temperature, and pulse oximetry, recognizes and reports values outside normal limits, rooms patients, reviews medications, allergies, tobacco exposure history and charts findings in the electronic medical record. Facilitates prescription refills per provider orders. Print and hand out After Visit Summaries to patients and families. Enters orders for all labs, ancillary testing and procedures into EpicCare and Cadence.
  • Coordinates ancillary referrals such as laboratory work, therapy and social services. Applies problem-solving and negotiation skills in resolving provider and patient concerns and other procedure related problems. Able to multi-task, prioritize and use time-management skills wisely and appropriately. Performs other duties assigned by manager.
  • Administrative Duties Schedules new and return patient appointments through EPIC for Pediatric Subspecialty Outreach clinics. Communicates with patients/families and other health care team members in a time and cost efficient and courteous manner. Obtains prior medical records and studies, if appropriate.
  • Files information in medical records as requested. Handles correspondence, orders, medical records and x-rays. Mails information packets to patients. Serves as back-up to PAS and MA staff as needed. Professional Development Participates in ongoing professional development and competency assessment including, but not limited to, attending educational classes appropriate to a job development, communicating additional training needs to direct supervisor, attending staff meetings, orienting new staff, cross- training for position in assigned or other areas.
  • Reports potential compliance problems using the reporting processes as outlined in the Code of Conduct. Performs other duties as assigned. Understands and complies with the Code of Conduct, OHSU and department policies and procedures, applicable rules, regulations, etc.
Required Qualifications: Completion of High School or GED. Successful completion of a licensed practical nurse program. Unencumbered Oregon LPN license BLS at time of hire Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation.
