Role title Data Analyst Asset Retirement Obligation and Global Registry Programs Location Austin Based Reporting to Executive Director Start date ASAP Term Permanent (subject to three-month probation period) Organization Carbon Tracker Initiative is looking for a passionate data specialist to help support data system optimization and analytics in an award-winning, high impact think tank. This role will support research analysts and data scientists in designing and developing improved data pipelines to increase efficiency and impact across two work programsthe Global Registry of Fossil Fuels (Registry) and the Asset Retirement Obligations (ARO). They will help manage databases and web applications to aid in deployment of high-impact digital communications in order to help drive financial markets to accelerate the energy transition. U.S. Team overview Carbon Tracker Initiatives US entity is a 501(c)(3) charity that was established in 2017 and today has six team members based across the US in the New York area, Austin and Portland. The US team has plans to grow in 2023 and beyond, we are therefore now seeking an individual to support and enable our growing team. The US team works closely with the UK Carbon Tracker Initiative team in London, which currently has 40 employees. ARO Program Description Carbon Tracker Initiatives Asset Retirement Obligation (ARO) program explains how the oil and gas industry is legally obligated to plug and abandon (P&A) wells, but it has not set aside the resources to do so. We estimate that plugging 2.6 million documented onshore wells in the U.S. alone will cost $280 billion. Available bonding data suggests that states on average have secured less than 1% of that amount in surety bonds. This means that oil and gas producing states are susceptible to serial operator defaults and exposed to hundreds of billions of dollars in orphan well liability risk. CTIs analysis explores the below questions regarding oilfield P&A obligations How much will it cost my state to plug of its oil and gas wells? How much will it cost my company to plug all of its oil and gas wells? What percentage of the plugging costs in my state are secured with some form of financial assurance? What is the overall picture for my state? Which companies have the largest liabilities? Global Registry Program Description The Global Registry is the first open-source database of oil, gas and coal production and reserves globally, expressed in CO2-equivalent. By increasing transparency and accountability around fossil fuel production, the Registry aims to improve understanding of extraction impacts on the remaining carbon budget and ultimately to inform its management by decision makers.
