Our client is seeking a hands-on Controller to replace the companys longstanding incumbent and to lead the traditional Corporate and Property Accounting functions. The primary day-to-day functions of this hand-on role will be to provide Accounting support for the senior management team on all aspects of the firms multi-family real estate portfolio, equity investments, and loans. In addition to the real estate business, there will be an opportunity to work directly with the CFO and CIO on the analysis and due diligence of a variety of private equity investments into other real estate-related transactions.
The Controller shall develop an understanding of the underlying agreements of each venture and become familiar with the specifics that are relevant to better understand the overall structure, including but not limited to partnership expenses, fees, commitments and subscriptions, capital calls and distributions, and financial reporting requirements. The expectation is that the Controller will build relationships with other internal and external stakeholders, to understand how the investment accounting functions impact all parties.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Analysis, Budgeting and modeling. Knowledge of Resman and Yardi a plus.
Plan and coordinate quarterly and year-end audits with outside Tax and Accounting firm.
Coordinate tax return filings for corporate and partnership entities with external Tax counsel.
Daily Treasury functions, including monitoring of daily cash activities and allocation of cash across entities.
Quarterly loan compliance and reporting.
Tracking of capital projects. Review fixed assets, classifications, write-offs, depreciation.
Oversee tenant billing functions and lease administration.
Oversee supporting accountant and bookkeeper.
Assist with a variety of investment analysis and special projects.
Use Resman and Yardi software (future planned implementation) to house all the General Ledgers by entity. Enter journal entries, run reports for analytics as well as reporting, and use the Investment Management module for cash, contributions, distributions, and other internal transactions.
Cash Management
Assist with the management of the day-to-day cash transactions of each fund/venture that is assigned. This includes but is not limited to daily oversight of bank accounts, maintaining administrative relationships with our banks as well as understanding the online banking platforms, managing the accounts payable process, setting up and inputting wire/ACH transactions, and completing or reviewing monthly bank reconciliations.
Financial Reporting
Report financials in accordance with US GAAP. Compile the monthly, quarterly, and annual financials. Prepare the monthly reporting and reconciling accounts, referencing and tying out the consolidated financials, prepare the support for the tables and charts that are included within the investor reporting, discussion and analysis, in coordination with the Investor Relations department. Assist with any ad hoc investor reporting, lender reporting, compliance certificates, and other ad hoc third-party reporting requested.
Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Accounting. CPA preferred.
Minimum 5-7 years of experience in commercial real estate or related role.
Strong quantitative and financial analysis experience.
Exposure to multifamily development projects preferred.
