About Burkes

Burke's is an independent K-8 gender-inclusive all-girls school located on a 3.5-acre campus in San Francisco. Position Description

We are looking for someone who is creative, organized, detail-oriented, comfortable with digital and printed media, and willing to learn new skills. We are seeking a person with excellent verbal and written communication skills and a desire to share the joyful stories of our busy school community. Relevant skills include writing, copy editing, project management, marketing, and public relations. Website management, and photography. Experience with advancement and graphic design skills are a plus, but not required.

The Communications and Advancement Assistant reports to the Director of Communications. This position will work with the Advancement team, under general supervision of the Director of Advancement to support print and digital communications for Burkes current parents, grandparents, alumnae, and donors. This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in learning about communications in the educational sector. The ideal candidate is interested in various visual and written communication platforms and wants to learn more about Advancement programming in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.


Work is performed on campus.

Job Responsibilities

  • Cover school events and write stories for the website, newsletters, and print publications
  • Support the creation of the printed Annual Report and Burkes Magazine
  • Create and organize content for email blasts, including a weekly newsletter for parents
  • Perform copywriting and proofreading tasks
  • Work with staff and parent committees on online content and provide user support for Burkes internal website
  • Provide photo and video support for events and assist in editing images and video for web
  • Assist in creating and supporting webpages for key events, programs, and fundraising initiatives
  • As needed, assist in designing print and digital media
  • Provide support at community events and fundraisers with three required weekend events per school year
  • Assist with special events planning, preparation and execution and processing of online RSVPs
  • Assist the Advancement department with the following duties: scheduling meetings, calendar and contacts maintenance, meeting preparation and follow-up, among additional responsibilities.
  • Assist in review of various donor listings, reports and mailings for accuracy
  • Other tasks as assigned

Requirements

Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelors degree is preferred
  • Professionalism and confidentiality is mandatory
  • Proven strong writing and editorial skills
  • Interest or affinity to education, children, or girls and womens issues
  • Experience in multiple digital communications platforms and formats, including social media
  • Knowledge of independent school or non-profit communications a plus
  • Initiative and independence in carrying out responsibilities
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and a variety of demands
  • Participating in the work of a small development/communications staff, assisting whenever necessary, branching out to other areas if needed
  • Comfort with basic website content management systems and working in HTML
  • Ability to work well in collaboration with a variety of individuals
  • Strong organizational skills

Compensation

Burkes offers competitive compensation with an hourly rate of $29.00- $31.00/hour based on years of experience. Comprehensive benefits are provided. Benefits include 100% employer-funded medical plan options, dental coverage, and 5% retirement plan contributions (once eligible).
