The Department of Education’s (DOE) Office of Food and Nutrition Services (OFNS) is committed to ensuring that over 1 million students have access to healthy food choices with high nutritional standards while offering delicious, healthy, and satisfying menu options. OFNS has a critical impact as it serves over 860,000 total meals daily throughout the five boroughs of New York City. The Assistant Supervisor will be responsible for supporting the Associate School Food Service Manager in planning and directing the overall operation of the food service program in the public and non-public schools in a specific geographic district.
Reports to: Regional Director
Direct Reports: OFNS staff within the designated area.
Key Relationships: Relationships will be fostered with OFNS employees and management, school level administration, Superintendents/CECs and school community.
Responsibilities
- Instruct and guide School Food Service Managers in all aspects of feeding site management.
- Assist in the management of food safety and sanitation initiatives in the field.
- Utilize metrics to manage the current OFNS focuses of increasing student participation in breakfast and lunch programs and reducing cost per meal without compromising School Food standards.
- Ensure SFSMs are appropriately managing all SF operations on the school level, recipe standardization, determination of quantities of food required, supplies, and equipment.
- Collaborate with ASFSM and Regional Director in reviewing, maintaining and adhering to current staffing guidelines.
- Responsible for monitoring, administering and enforcing progressive discipline as needed.
- Organize and conduct training workshops for SFSMs and other SF personnel.
Qualification Requirements
Minimum
The position is available to all School Food Service Managers.
Preferred:
- Strong OFNS service management experience
- Organizational skills and the ability to multi-task
- Understanding of OFNS policies, procedures and systems
- Demonstrates ability in Microsoft applications
Other criteria include:
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with a major in foods, culinary arts, nutrition, hotel/restaurant institutional management, baking and pastry arts, food service entrepreneurship, dietetics, food service administration, health and nutrition sciences with a concentration in foods and nutrition, or a closely related field, and two years of full-time satisfactory experience in managing a restaurant or quantity food service operation, or as a nutritionist or dietitian, at least one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or
2. An associate degree from an accredited college with a major in foods, culinary arts, nutrition, hotel/restaurant institutional management, baking and pastry arts, food service entrepreneurship, dietetics, food service administration, health and nutrition sciences with a concentration in foods and nutrition, or a closely related field, and four years of full-time satisfactory experience in managing a restaurant or quantity food service operation, or as a nutritionist or dietitian, at least one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
