VOICE UP APPLIED PURPOSE SCIENCE RESEARCH INTERNSHIP
Qualitative, Mixed Methods, or Quantitative

Exploring Purpose at the Intersection of Developmental Science, Practice-Based Learning, and Human Flourishing
Voice Up invites students to explore how purpose-driven researchers study the developmental process through which people discover, articulate, and act on their purpose. This 8-12 week internship connects developmental psychology, practice-based learning, recognition science, and ethical research to transformative work in Applied Purpose Science where purpose is developmental, not performative; recognition is accurate, not extractive; and practice remains human-centered, not instrumentalized.
FOUNDATIONAL PREMISE: Purpose is not a trait. It is a developmental process that unfolds through lived experience, recognition, and choice. The Applied Purpose Science Research Lab is founded on the belief that people are not unmotivated, but often unrecognized; experience precedes articulation; confidence follows coherence; and ethical timing matters as much as outcomes. This internship exists to study, steward, and protect these truths in practice.
PROGRAM FOUNDATION
Fuller Method reflective mentoring and narrative identity development
B Curriculum for clarity, self-discovery, and meaning-making
Voice Up's Five Core Principles (Collaboration, Humility, Precision, Patience, Empathy)
Applied Purpose Science Lab's Non-Negotiable Principles
Real-world research studying purpose as developmental process
LEARNING GOALS
Students develop: Understanding of purpose as developmental process shaped by lived experience, recognition, and choice not trait or assignment Connection between personal narrative and opportunities to study how people discover purpose across contexts (Universities of Practice, recognition infrastructure, identity formation) Critical skills in developmental research methods, practice-based learning evaluation, ethical data governance, recognition science, and cross-site synthesis Purpose-based research proposals studying developmental indicators, recognition patterns, or practice fidelity Professional identity as Applied Purpose Science researcher through reflective practice and ethical stewardship
INTERNSHIP STRUCTURE
Weeks 1-2: B Curriculum, personal purpose narrative, Fuller Method mentoring, exploration of purpose as developmental process, Lab's six non-negotiable principles (purpose is orientation not assignment, recognition is accuracy not praise, confidence is outcome not prerequisite, silence is adaptive not deficient, choice outweighs momentum, no responsibility without recognition)
Weeks 3-4: Developmental psychology foundations, practice-based learning theory, recognition and identity formation research, ethical research design protecting against identity foreclosure and premature sorting, mini-literature review on Applied Purpose Science topics
Weeks 5-6: Research methods for studying purpose development, tracking developmental indicators over time, learning across pilots and contexts, designing non-extractive data practices, mentor sessions on ethical research frameworks
Weeks 7-8: Capstone research proposal, contribution to Purpose Library, presentation synthesizing cross-site learning or developmental patterns
Optional Weeks 9-12: Research assistantship with Lab, advanced methods in recognition science, longitudinal study design, presentations to Stewardship Council or Research & Learning Circle
KEY DELIVERABLES
Applied Purpose Science Researcher Identity Statement integrating personal narrative with commitment to developmental integrity
Purpose Development Process Map visualizing how lived experience, recognition, and choice interact across contexts
Research Ethics Brief applying Lab's non-negotiable principles to study design and data practices
Purpose-based project: developmental indicator tracking study, recognition pattern analysis, Universities of Practice evaluation, practice fidelity assessment, or cross-site synthesis research
LAB'S NON-NEGOTIABLE PRINCIPLES
All Lab-aligned work adheres to: Purpose is orientation, not assignment Recognition is accuracy, not praise Confidence is an outcome, not a prerequisite Silence is adaptive, not deficient Choice always outweighs momentum No one carries responsibility without recognition. Students learn to identify when these principles are upheld or violated in research and practice.
PARTICIPATION & ALIGNMENT

At the heart of Voice Up is a simple but powerful belief:
Purpose already exists within people. It does not need to be assigned or imposed it needs space, structure, and care to emerge.
Voice Up creates those conditions by combining reflection, community participation, mentoring, and applied challenges. The work is intentionally non-clinical and non-diagnostic. It does not ask people to perform, compete, disclose, or be fixed. Instead, it invites participation at ones own pace within environments designed for safety, dignity, and growth.
This approach has resonated across cultures, ages, and institutions because it meets people where they are. Students who have opted out of traditional programs. Athletes navigating pressure or transition. Educators seeking preventive approaches to wellbeing. Communities looking for ways to support mental health without over-pathologizing normal human struggle.
